Under 10 Reports

Game1

North Ayr Sabres 24

Kilmarnock Whirlwinds 2

With Coach Darren Coles giving so many of his young team their first run out, the Whirlwinds were always going to be up against it this outing. Many of these youngsters have only been in the game for a few short weeks. This team were there for the passion for the sport and to gain some valuable match experience, and that’s what they did. They enjoyed trying out their newly learned drills and gave it their collective best shot. Their attitude and conduct on the ice was impressive and did their Club proud. With their dedication and enthusiasm, and with Darren’s continued encouragement and support at their Friday night training sessions, this super team are set to get better and better as the season progresses.

Netminder Angus Laing was Whirlwinds’ Man of the Match for his high percentage shutout during his first outing in nets under match pressure.

Game 2

Kilmarnock Whirlwinds 6

North Ayr Sabres 16

In the final match on Saturday, the Kilmarnock Whirlwinds took to the ice. This was a first match outing for rookies Jordan and Liam McHallam, Jack Gemmell and Sam Keane, and they supported their slightly more experienced team mates extremely well. With this young squad growing so quickly in numbers, and showing such great promise, the Whirlwinds never disappoint their supporters with their enthusiasm and determination, and this outing was no different. Although the final score was a little disappointing, it showed a closing of the gap between the Whirlwinds and their local Ayrshire rivals and their supporters can look forward to better and better results as the season progresses. Particular mention should be made of the super effort by netminder Angus Laing who was under pressure throughout the game and who coped so well with everything that came his way, including saving two second period penalty shots against him.

Whirlwinds’ Man of the Match was awarded to Angus Manson who was on top scoring form.

Scorers: R. McCready (1+2), A. Manson (2), B. Kerr (1+2), J. Gemmell (1), A. Barr (0+2), D. Allan (0+1)

Significant thanks are due to Under 16’s Coach Stephen Findlay who took the bench for all three games while his coaching colleagues were at a training course to ‘top-up’ their coaching qualifications. Stephen put in a very long shift indeed and his help was greatly appreciated by the Club.

Game 3

CHALLENGE GAME

Kilmarnock Whirlwinds 0

Dundee Stars 19

This was a good opportunity for Coach Darren Coles to give his team of very young and inexperienced players a run out against arguably the best Under-10’s team around at the moment. Although the scoreline was a disappointing one, the players showed determination and commitment throughout the game and certainly could not be faulted for effort.

Whirlwinds’ Man of the Match was netminder Angus Laing who coped well under the constant pressure from the Stars.

Game 4

Kilmarnock Whirlwinds - IIHF UNDER10’s TOURNAMENT IN DUNDEE

Kilmarnock’s youngest players, were not left at home this weekend either, as they travelled to Dundee to take part in the IIHF Tournament. It was a treat for the players’ supporters who enjoyed a sociable outing as well as some impressive ice hockey. The Whirlwinds played teams from from Dundee, Fife, North Ayr, Inverness, Elgin, Solway and Murrayfield and were pitted against some of the best under-10’s team currently in Scottish junior ice hockey. They certainly did the Club proud. Coach Darren Coles was delighted that all his young players gave their very best and put in some great effort, displaying good team work and determination. The results were a mixed bag, with 3 wins, 2 draws and 4 losses but the results scarcely mattered as their enjoyment of the Tournament was what it was all about. Whirlwinds’ stars Ronan McCready, Scott Snaddon, Andrew Barr, Gregor Haining, Angus Manson and Jack Gemmell were all on excellent scoring form and were well supported by their less experienced teammates . As a celebration for 100 years of IIHF, all players were presented with an ice hockey top and commemorative badge. How chuffed were they!?!?
