KILMARNOCK LIGHTNING 4

NORTH AYR STARS 3

This was also the first league outing for Kilmarnock Lightning’s new team line-up and the players were all desperate to hit the ice. Their confidence was justified when Derek Paton scored the first goal of the match after just 2 minutes of play. Just one minute later Lightning’s puck was in the Stars’ net for a second time. The Stars equalised and the play was quite intense until Derek Paton completed his hat trick giving his team a half-time 3-2 lead. The players returned to the ice for the second period hopeful of maintaining their lead and after just 20 seconds of second half play, team captain, Fraser Kerr extended the lead. Both teams battled on relentlessly, with the visitors clocking up more penalties than goals, until Stars’ Ryan Adams, snatched back a great unassisted goal, taking the score to a 4-3 win for Lightning. Lightning were delighted to welcome new team mates Jamie Barr-Cairns and Adam Stuart to the bench. Both players made their mark on the game and look certain to make an excellent contribution to the team both on and off the ice.

Defenceman Ryan Parkin was Lightning’s Man of the Match for his skilful defending and skating which impacted so positively on his team’s final position.

Scorers: D. Paton (3), F, Kerr (1), J. Barr-Cairns (0+2), C. Speirs (0+1), D, Gardner (0+1)

Game2

Kilmarnock Lightning 11

Solway Sharks 0

Lightning were pleased to have sharpshooter Cameron McCready back on their bench after his brief absence, and he made his presence felt when he combined with defenceman Ryan Parkin and opened the scoring after only 30 seconds of play. The Sharks played skilfully on and managed to keep Lightning’s puck out of their net for a while but by the end of the first period, Cameron McCready had completed his hat trick and with a goal from team mate Derek Paton, Lightning had established a comfortable 4-0 lead. Lightning returned to the ice with no thoughts of going easy, and although the Sharks defended their net well, Lightning fired through a steady stream of goals, giving an 11-0 final score. The Sharks were, as always, primarily a sporting and very able team, and playing them was the more enjoyable for the players for that. Lightning were pleased to welcome new signing, Dylan Ogden to their bench. Dylan had an excellent first game under the Kilmarnock banner.

Lightning’s Netminder Chris Coles was their Man of the Match whose top quality saves preserved his shutout and made an important difference to his team’s goal difference this outing.

Scorers: C. McCready (4+3), F. Kerr (2+2), D. Paton (3), R. Parkin (1+5), M. McPhail (1), J. Barr-Cairns (0+3), C. Speirs (0+1), E. Maxwell (0+1), D. Ogden (0+1)

Lightning were definitely looking for their win from the outset, but they took longer than usual to open the scoresheet. Eventually though, Cameron McCready and team captain Fraser Kerr combined to take the first goal. After that Lightning dominated the game and fired a steady stream of goals past the Rapiers’ netminder, Edward Fennell who coped well under some pressure throughout the game.

Fraser Kerr was Lightning’s Man of the Match for all his hard work and determination.

Game 4

North Ayr Stars 3

Kilmarnock Lightning 7

It looked from the outset that both teams were going to be equally matched for skills and determination this outing but it was Lightning ultimately who dominated the play. That all important first goal was a hard fought struggle but after 9 minutes of play, Lightning’s Cameron McCready combined with defencemen Dale Gardner to hit the back of the Stars’ net. Within 2 more minutes Cameron McCready and Team Captain Fraser Kerr together had put another 2 pucks past the Stars’ netminder. By half time Lightning had taken a comfortable 4-1 lead. When the teams returned to the ice, they still had all to play for and together they produced some exciting ice hockey. Again though, Lightning took the upper hand giving them a well-deserved 7-3 win.

Lightning’s Man of the Match was Cameron McCready, whose strong performance throughout the match kept his team ahead.

Scorers: C. McCready (4+2), F. Kerr (3+1), D. Gardner (0+4) Dylan Ogden (0+1), E. Maxwell (0+1), D. Paton (0+1), M McPhail (0+1), A. Stuart (0+1)

Game 5

Kirkcaldy Chiefs 4

Kilmarnock Lightning 2

Again the Kilmarnock players were outnumbered by their Fife rivals but what ensued may well amount to the match of the season. The Lightning squad was on fire with each and every player pulling their weight and enjoying one of the main Scottish League match challenges. Lightning kept their heads throughout, even when the Chiefs scored within the first minute of play. With 4 minutes left to the final whistle, Lightning had held the Chiefs to a terrific 2-2 and treated their supporters to some of the best hockey they’re likely to see in a long while. Unfortunately with team captain, Fraser Kerr off injured and the rest of the team starting to tire, the Chiefs were quick to pick up on their advantage and took 2 late goals and two league points. There was little despondency in the Lightning changing room afterwards though as Coach Andy Millar and his players were all rightly proud of their efforts.

Tornadoes Man of the Match was Fraser Kerr who worked so hard during the first half of the game.

Scorers: R. Parkin (1), A. Stuart (1), D. Paton (0+1, C. McCready (0+1), J. Barr-Cairns (0+1)

Game 6

Kilmarnock Lightning 8

Aberdeen Under14’s 0

Kilmarnock Junior Ice Hockey Club was absolutely devastated by the loss of their friend Allan Parkin at the start of the week. Wearing their black armbands as a mark of respect, Lightning were determined to make this match a fitting tribute to a well-loved man. They hit the ice with the advantage of outnumbering their northern rivals but it was their finishing skills and teamwork that won them their league points. Goals were initially hard to come by, but in the 7 th minute of play, Cameron McCready combined with Martin McPhail and Ryan Parkin and fired two goals into Aberdeen’s net. Martin and Ryan worked their magic together just seconds later giving their team a comfortable 3 – 0 lead. By half time that lead had extended to an even more comfortable 7-0. The atmosphere tensed somewhat during the second period and although Lightning continued to power round Aberdeen’s zone, their netminder and defencemen did an excellent job of keeping the goals at bay. With just 3 minutes left to play, tempers flared and with an even 3 from each team sent off, the pressure was really on the already shorthanded Aberdeen team, however despite this, they held their own and the game ended with an 8-0 win for Lightning.

It was all hockey players united again though, when the teams returned to the ice, with their Under 16’s teammates. Players from both teams, joined their supporters in what was a minute of truly rapturous applause and stick rattling, in celebration of Allan Parkin’s life and particularly of his time as an supportive and active member of Kilmarnock Junior Ice Hockey Club. Proceeds from the door takings for all three matches and from the match day raffles were donated to the CLIC Sergent cancer charity, in memory of Allan Parkin. Thank you to all the home and visiting supporters who gave so generously towards this excellent cause.

Lightning’s Man of the Match was awarded to Dylan Ogden for his excellent defending throughout the game.

Scorers: C. McCready (2+3), F. Kerr (2), M. McPhail (1+2), D. Paton (1+1), D. Notman (1), J. Barr-Cairns (1), R. Parkin (0+2), Cillian Boyle (0+1), C. Lusk (0+1)

Game 7

Kilmarnock Lightning 14

Elgin Sky Pirates 1

With their Team Captain out through injury and another key player absent from the bench, Coach Andy Millar had to adjust his lines for this outing. It then took the players a bit longer than usual to find their usual form and the Sky Pirates surprised them when they took the first goal. Lightning’s frustration was held in check and they continued to power around the Sky Pirates’ zone to dominate the play and take the majority of the possession as they went. Eventually, after a tense 9 minutes of play, Lightning’s sharpshooter Cameron McCready combined with defenceman Dylan Notman to produce an excellent first goal. After that Lightning scored a steady stream of goals throughout the first half giving them a 5-1 lead. Throughout the second half Lightning kept Sky Pirates’ netminder Patrick Feeley under significant pressure and although he coped well with everything that went his way, Lightning were delighted to come away with a decisive 14-1 win.

Cameron McCready was Lightning’s Man of the Match for his excellent finishing skills in front of goal.

Scorers: C. McCready (7), D. Paton (2+2), J Barr-Cairns (2), A. Frodsham (1+2), A. Stuart (1+1), M McPhail (1), D Notman (0+2), C. Lusk (0+1), D. Gardner (0+1), D Ogden (0+1), D Spiers (0+1), C Boyle (0+1), E Maxwell (0+1)

Game 8

Aberdeen Under 14’s 1

Kilmarnock Lightning 17

After a long and dismal drive north to Aberdeen, Lightning seemed a little jaded and lack lustre when they hit the ice. Despite taking early possession of the puck and holding it in the home team’s zone, the Aberdeen defence was initially able to keep Lightning’s attack at bay. Eventually though, Ryan Parkin combined with Connor Lusk to score and make the journey start to feel worthwhile, 7 minutes into the first half. After that the goals just kept coming with Derek Paton taking just 2 minutes to complete his hat trick. By half time, Lightning were leading 6-0. Mid-way through the second period, Aberdeen’s netminder, Bryan Morres, who had otherwise had an excellent game, knocked the puck into his own net much to his very great dismay, but it didn’t make much of an impact on the final result. The second period played out pretty much like the first with the puck going in the net but some fairly unexciting hockey in between. Lightning came away nevertheless delighted with their 17-1 win.

Adam Stuart was awarded Lightning’s Man of the Match for his excellent team working and linking throughout the game.

Scorers: D. Paton (5+1), C. McCready (5), A. Stuart (2+3), D. Gardner (2+1), R. Parkin (2), J. Barr-Cairns (1), A. Frodsham (0+4), C. Lusk (0+2), C Spiers (0+2), L. Gardner (0+1)

Game 9

Kilmarnock Lightning 13

Inverness Spartans 0

Like their younger team mates the Spartans were both travel fatigued and outnumbered but they played determinedly, and although they were no match for Lightning they gave them a good game. Forwards Andrew Frodsham and Derek Paton combined to take the first goal three minutes into the game and that really set the pace for the game. By half-time Lightning were 5-0 ahead. All of the action had been at the Spartans’ net and netminder Richard Wallace coped well under the pressure making no fewer than 39 saves. The hockey wasn’t the most exciting that supporters have seen from Lightning this season but it was a good final result. What will almost certainly be THE goal of this season though, came in the last 9 minutes of play when Lightning’s sharpshooter, Cameron McCready, managed to put the puck in the Spartans net from behind the blue line in his own team’s zone. It was truly unbelievable and unsavable!

Lightning’s Man of the Match was defenceman Euan Maxwell, who played a strong and steady game throughout.

Scorers: C. McCready (3+1), D. Paton (2+4), A. Stuart (2+1), F. Kerr (2), R. Parkin (2), A. Frodsham (1+2), M. McPhail (1+1).

Game 10

Solway Sharks14’s 2

Kilmarnock Lightning 10

In the second of their doubleheaders this weekend, Lightning travelled down to the Dumfries Ice Bowl for an early face-off. Missing two key forwards, Coach Andy Millar had to rework his lines for this outing. This combined with a few surprising decisions by the referee at the outset meant that it took the team longer than usual to settle into their game. That said, Team Captain Fraser Kerr and Dale Gardner combined and opened the score sheet in just over a minute. By the end of the first period Lightning led by 4-0. With only 10 minutes of play left, Lightning seemed to recover some of their usual form and they took 4 more goals, making their win a decisive one. Lightning produced an excellent final result score-wise but unfortunately for their supporters their performance was still not at it’s very best this outing.

Lightning’s Man of the Match was Jamie Barr-Cairns for his excellent supporting play.

Scorers: F. Kerr (2), A. Stuart (2+1), D. Notman (2), C. Boyle (1). R. Parkin (1+1), D. Paton (1), M. McPhail (1), D. Gardner (0+3), J. Barr-Cairns (0+3), L. Gardner (0+2), D. Ogden (0+1), D. Speirs (0+1)

Game 11

Kilmarnock Lightning 2

Dundee Stars 3

Both teams very much wanted a win this outing and they were looking forward to the challenge of a game against a team which league-wise were equals in terms of ability. They all hit the ice with everything to play for. Lightning dominated the first period although the Stars’ defenders and netminder Craig Chalmers, were on top form and kept the puck out of their net quite effectively. Stars were first to break through though and were disappointed when the referee called a ‘no-goal’. This distracted them briefly and Lightning’s Martin McPhail and Dylan Ogden finally opened the scoresheet after an agonising 14 minutes. The Stars made a swift response when James Smith scored just 2 minutes later. With a level 1-1 at the end of the first period the atmosphere both on and off-ice was electric and the players returned to the ice all still hungry for that all-important win. The Stars pulled 2-1 ahead with Lightning equalising shortly thereafter. Unfortunately though, Lightning’s decision to play a two-line system to Dundee’s three-lines proved to be a tactical error as the Lightning players started to tire and although they held their own, they were unable to keep the Stars’ out of their zone. Lightning looked under increasing pressure and were unable to shut down James Smith when he shot and scored with just seconds left of the game giving his team an irretrievable lead. Although it was a disappointing result for the home team, it was a very sporting game despite the competitive approach of both teams, and Lightning enjoyed the run out. These teams were indeed a match for each other and their next league encounter is sure to be an interesting one.

Lightning’s Man of the Match was Dale Gardner who’s hard work in defence helped keep his team’s hopes alive right to the end.

Scorers: M. McPhail (1), F. Kerr (1), D. Ogden (0+1), C. McCready (0+1)

Game 12

Inverness Spartans 0

Kilmarnock Lightning 6

Also none the worse of having expended some energy snowballing, Lightning were confident of a win this outing. Goals were surprisingly slow in coming however, and the score sheet remained blank until mid-way through the first period when Andrew Frodsham and Connor Speirs combined to take the first goal. Lightning powered around the Spartans zone for most of the first period, but struggled to finish off their excellent groundwork, leaving them with a disappointing 2-0 lead at half time. When they returned to the ice however, Lightning seemed to remember what they were there for and they galvanised themselves into action, to finish the game 6-0 ahead.

It has to be said that the Spartans were an excellent sporting team and pleasure to play. All of the players on the ice seemed to be enjoying this outing very much. Special thanks are due to the Inverness Fixtures Secretary who took pity on the far travelled visiting supporters and opened the café!

Lightning’s Man of the Match was Martin McPhail whose skating speeds and supporting play contributed to his team’s excellent result.

Scorers: D. Paton (3+1), J. Barr-Cairns (2), A. Frodsham (1+2), C. Speirs (0+1)

Game 13

Elgin Sky Pirates 1

Kilmarnock Lightning 8

For the second weekend in a row Lightning players ventured north, this time to play Elgin. A quick jog round the leisure centre wakened the players up after the long drive and suitably energised them for the game ahead. From the very start Lightning looked confident and capable and Team Captain Fraser Kerr showed that he and his team were on excellent form when he scored unassisted after only 4 minutes of play. After some superb team working between Fraser and Cameron McCready, Lightning were soon 3-0 ahead, and with Derek Paton and Adam Stuart also combining well, the visitors left the ice at the end of the first period, 5-0 up. Sky Pirates’ Forest Watson took Lightning’s netminder Chris Coles when he scored unassisted but it didn’t take Chris long to recover his usual sparkling form and provide his team mates with an impenetrable net. Fraser and Cameron worked their magic yet again to put Lightning even further ahead and a late unassisted goal from Jay Barr Cairns in the dying seconds of the match finished this outing with a flourish.

Making a return to his position in defence this outing, Lightning’s Man of the Match was awarded to Cillian Boyle who contributed well to his team’s efforts throughout the game.

Scorers: C. McCready (4), F, Kerr (2+2), J. Barr-Cairns (1), D. Paton (1), M. McPhail (0+2), A. Stuart (0+1)

SCOTTISH CUP

Murrayfield Rapiers 1

Kilmarnock Lightning 15

Lightning’s hopes of the Scottish Cup 2008 moved a step in the right direction on Saturday when they visited the capital and brought home a decisive and well-deserved win. Lightning’s sharpshooter Cameron McCready was on top form scoring new fewer than 7 of the goals, and with Derek Paton, combining well with team mates Andrew Frodsham and Adam Stuart and taking another 7 goals, there was really no danger of Lightning coming home empty handed from this outing.

Lightning are now through to the semi-finals and will play the Dundee Stars and with those teams jockeying for league points and being so well matched in skills and experience, supporters look set to be in for some exciting ice hockey.

Lightning’s Man of the Match was Andrew Frodsham who made some excellent supporting play and had a hand in a good number f the goals.

Scorers: C. McCready (7+1), D. Paton (7), F. Kerr (1+2), A. Frodsham (0+4), A. Stuart (0+3).

Game 14

Dundee Stars14’s 3

Kilmarnock Lightning 1

Lightning and the Stars were well-matched again this outing in terms of numbers and skills and this game lived up to its promise. Much to supporters’ deligh,t together the teams produced some fantastic and exciting ice hockey. The Stars star player, James Smith opened the scoring after 5 minutes of play but thereafter both teams powered around the other’s zone battling hard for possession of the puck and chasing it down desperately looking for that much needed goal. Certainly neither team could be faulted for effort. Lightning’s Derek Paton scored an excellent unassisted equaliser and his team’s spirits were restored and they could see the win in sight again. Unfortunately, much to Coach Andy Miller’s frustration, as Lightning began to try a little too hard, the Stars’ consistent positioning gave them the edge and with the final whistle just 5 minutes away, they grabbed two late goals.

Lightning’s Man of the Match was Chris Coles who had coped so well with everything the Stars put his way and contributed well to the final low score.

Scorer: D. Paton (1)

Game 15

Kilmarnock Lightning 5

Kirkcaldy Chiefs 8

Also seriously outnumbered by the visitors, and aware that the Chiefs already had their Scottish League win in their pocket, Lightning were looking to secure their current position in the League and enjoy the promise of a tough game against some worthy opponents. For a while the players powered round each other’s zone and although Lightning had their share of possession, it was their own netminder, the very able Chris Coles who was feeling the heat. Goals were hard fought though for both teams and by the end of the first period the score stood at a dramatic 4-4. The picture was no different when the teams returned to the ice and the final 8-5 score really did not reflect the quality of Lightning’s game.

Tornadoes Man of the Match was Team Captain Fraser Kerr who, as always covered the ice effectively and set up some important play.

Scorers: D. Paton (2), A. Frodsham (1+1), A. Stuart (1+1), M. McPhail (1), F. Kerr (0+1), D. Ogden (0+1)

Game 16

Kilmarnock Lightning 14

Northern Ireland 1

On Sunday, 6 April 2008Lightning were more than prepared for their last league game of the season and they had their eye on the double points available. The home team played like professionals and kept the River Rats under pressure from the first face-off and it was no surprise when Lightning’s sharpshooter Andrew Frodsham combined effectively with Adam Stuart and produced a first goal after just 3 minutes. Within 5 minutes Andrew had completed his hat trick and showed yet again what a talented player he is. The River Rats played determinedly and at times showed that they were worthy competitors, however it really was Lightning’s day. They delighted Coach Andy Millar with their fine display of team-working and they did not miss an opportunity to show off their skills. For supporters it the game was a pleasure to watch and the visitors were a pleasure to play.

The Coach had a more difficult decision than usual in picking Lightning’s Man of the Match but the accolade went to Derek Paton who was on top form throughout the game.

Scorers: D. Paton (7+2), A. Frodsham (3+2), M. McPhail (2+1), D. Gardner (1), C. Boyle (1), A. Stuart (0+2), E. Maxwell (0+1).

Kilmarnock Lightning 1

Dundee Stars 3

In the first of the weekend’s double headers, Lightning played Dundee stars at home in the first leg of the Scottish Cup semi finals. On previous form, the teams were equally skilled and determined and it was set to be one of the best of the season. Unfortunately for Lightning they were without some of their most experienced defenders and they were surely missed. Things looked good for Lightning when forwards Adam Stuart, Derek Paton and Andrew Frodsham combined effectively to take the first goal. However, thereafter it all went the Stars’ way and while Lightning lacked nothing in terms of effort the Stars kept their shape and deserved their win.

Lightning’s Man of the Match was Netminder Chris Coles who kept the score down with some truly skilled saves.

Scorers: A. Stuart (1), D. Paton (0+1), a. Frodsham (0+1)

Dundee Stars 5

Kilmarnock Lightning 1

Lightning travelled to Dundee to play for the second leg of the semis on Sunday. It turned out pretty much as expected and a repeat of Saturday’s game. Again, Lightning took the first goal when Cameron McCready , combined well with Fraser Kerr and Martin McPhail, however the Stars made a swift response and equalised less than 20 seconds later. Lightning battled on and never have up hope of another goal, and indeed suffered the agony of several near misses, but again the Stars deserved their win. It was an enjoyable sporting game throughout and the Lightning players wish the Dundee players well in the finals against Kirkcaldy at the end of this month.

For the second day running Netminder Chris Coles was deservedly awarded lightning’s man of the Match .

Scorers: C. McCready (1), F. Kerr (0+1), M. McPhail (0+1)
